Zero Waste Swap: Brush with Bamboo Toothbrush

With several billions of plastic toothbrushes finding their way to landfills and oceans every year, it’s no wonder that plastic is at the center of our environmental crisis. According to National Geographic:

“Of the 8.3 billion metric tons [of plastic] that has been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons has become plastic waste. Of that, only nine percent has been recycled. The vast majority—79 percent—is accumulating in landfills or sloughing off in the natural environment as litter. Meaning: at some point, much of it ends up in the oceans, the final sink.”

Plastic takes hundred of years to degrade and only a fraction of it is recycled. With marine ecosystems being its eventual graveyard, plastic poses physical and chemical threats to both marine and bird life. National Geographic notes that, “by mid-century, the oceans will contain more plastic waste than fish, ton for ton…”

What a horrifying statistic. How can we keep plastics out of our landfills and oceans? Use less of it! One way to minimize your plastic consumption is to switch to a sustainable, bio-based toothbrush.

Brush With Bamboo Packaging

Brush With Bamboo is the most eco-friendly brush that I could find on the market. Here are the deets:

  • Sustainable, biodegradable  bamboo handle — the bamboo is pesticide and fertilizer free and watered by natural mountain rain
  • Recyclable plant-based bristles (62% castor bean oil, 38% plastic — this is my only minor gripe with the brush, but it’s still better than other brushes on the market!)
  • Compostable, plant-based wrapper
  • Recyclable/biodegradable cardboard packaging
  • Designed in the USA and ethically made in China

Read more about the brush on the Brush With Bamboo Website.

The brush performs much like a conventional plastic toothbrush — it’s lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, and the bristles are soft enough for my sensitive gums. As with conventional toothbrushes, these brushes need to be replaced every 3 months. There are many ways to dispose of and/or upcycle this product, too!

If you’re a zero waste enthusiast or just embarking on your “make less waste” journey, bamboo toothbrushes are an easy and accessible zero waste swap.
