When Sahajan Skincare’s founder, Lisa Mattam, reached out and asked if I’d be interested in trying her products, I jumped at the chance! I’d been watching this brand for a few years now but had yet to try their products.
Sahajan, the Hindi word for intuitive, is based on 5,000-year-old Indian mind-body practice called Ayurveda. This ancient practice uses diet, yoga, meditation, and plant-based medicine to restore health. This skincare brand’s products are free of harmful ingredients including parabens, phthalates, sulphates, petroleum, BHT, synthetic fragrance, DEA, TEA, propylene glycol, diazolidinyl urea, and artificial colours. What are in these products? According to their website, Sahajan uses “only the purest plant oils and extracts, and traceable, non-GMO sources for our ingredients.”
Sahajan’s belief in Ayurveda goes as far as to back their claims using laboratory testing to evaluate the efficacy of their products. They also use independent third-party lab review of all claims and perception studies whereby “neutral clinical organizations measure the experience of people using their products.”
Now on to the reviews!
Performance: As I’ve been inching closer and closer to 35, my skin has been craving more and more moisture. I’ve tried numerous oil cleansers in the past but found them to be too heavy, stripping, or drying. This cleanser—with antioxidant-rich moringa oil and soothing rose oil—works well with my skin. Coconut oil usually irritates my facial skin, but this particular formulation seems to be ok. The weight of this oil is neither flimsy nor too viscous. It turns into a milky consistency with water and washes cleanly without stripping the skin.
The cleanser agreed with my skin the first week, but the second and third saw lots of purging (and breakouts). By the fourth week, my skin adjusted completely, and this cleanser has been working well from that point. If you’re new to oil cleanser or just switching out your routine cleanser, be patient; you may see breakouts as it takes a while for the skin to get used to new products. With that said, because this provides such a deep cleanse, my sensitive skin seems to happiest when I use it a few times a week.
Scent Profile: While this product has an earthy/herbal smell, the aroma of rose is also prominent for me. Other ingredients include sunflower seed oil, moringa oil, and coconut oil, but these notes don’t come through for me.
Packaging: Beautifully printed cardboard packaging and a luxurious amber glass bottle.
Ingredients: Isoamyl Cocoate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Di‐PPG‐2 Myreth‐10 Adipate, Squalane, Polyglyceryl‐3 Beeswax, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil), Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Rose Centifolia Flower Extract, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Lethicin, Tocopherol
Price: $48.00 USD
Disposal: Recyclable amber glass bottle with a plastic pump and recyclable cardboard box.
Performance: Truth be told, I was a bit apprehensive about this product because it contains salicylic acid. This opinion was informed by my past experiences using acne-fighting products that contained salicylic acid; they were far too harsh on my sensitive skin. Even though this product contains salicylic acid, it’s surprisingly gentle. It’s also the creamiest toner I’ve ever used. I haven’t seen anything like it! It melts into the skin quickly, leaving it supple
Scent Profile: Formulated with moringa oil, rose water, and orange, lemon, and bilberry extracts, the scent of this toner is herbal—and unsurprisingly—citrusy. Overall, its scent is very soothing and dissipates quickly once smoothed on the skin.
Packaging: Luxurious amber glass bottle and cardboard packaging.
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Lusolecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Xanthan Gum, Pullulan, Vaccinium Myrtillus (Bilberry) Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Acer Saccharinum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Trehalose, *Fragrance. *I am natural so my fragrance is natural too.
Price: $40.00 USD
Disposal: Recyclable amber glass bottle with a plastic cap and recyclable cardboard box.
Overall, I’m impressed with Sahajan Skincare and these products! With its generous sizing, clean ingredients, and gentle but effective performance, I’d be interested in purchasing these in the future. I think their Radiance Face serum is next on my list! Have you tried Sahajan? Comment below!
