Review: Beauty Heroes and Khus + Khus Bleu Body Wax and Sans Age Face Serum

Truth be told, I’ve always been a bit skeptical of subscription boxes — most of them seem underwhelming. I can safely say that is NOT the case with Beauty Heroes. After watching and reading reviews about this service for over a year, I finally took the plunge and purchased a 3 month subscription.

Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than some boxes, but in comparison to comparable subscription services on the market, I can safely say that the value and quality of products that Beauty Heroes offers is unparalleled. Beauty Heroes seeks out only the greenest, cleanest indie beauty brands to feature. It’s comforting to know that I’m using safe products on my skin. I’m also thoroughly impressed with their customer service — I emailed them with a question and received a response within a few hours. But enough gushing about Beauty Heroes; on to the review!

My first box featured KHUS+KHUS, a brand that believes that plants support the body and mind in healing. Being of Indian heritage and having grown up with Ayurveda in my home, I’m particularly picky about Ayurveda-influenced products. Disclaimer: I’m neither saying I’m an Ayurveda expert nor am I an Ayurveda practitioner. What I am saying is that I’ve had the joy of growing up with and incorporating Ayurveda in my life and have spent a significant time with those who are seasoned Ayurveda practitioners. With that said, given my experience with this ancient system of medicine, I like to do a bit of homework around brands who claim to incorporate Ayurveda teachings into their formulations.

I think Kristi Blustein — the founder of KHUS+KHUS — does an an effective job of simultaneously infusing Ayurvedic techniques and injecting her own modern herbalist interpretations into her formulations. Per the KHUS+KHUS website, Kristi has devoted 5 years and over 2700 hours to learning yoga and Ayurvedic science. I’m unsure if Kristi has had the opportunity to spend time in India, but if she hasn’t, I hope she does in the near future!

Khus Khus body wax and face serum

Packaging: Absolutely gorgeous! The glass feels substantial and luxurious in your hands. According to KHUS+KHUS: “At KHUS+KHUS we use miron violet glass bottles to keep our ingredients fresh, and craft our oils from the highest quality plants available. Our formulas are non-GMO, 99% organic,100% plant based & made with love.”

Ingredients: I reached out to the founder, Kristi Blustein, via Instagram, and she graciously gave me this response when I asked how her ingredients are sourced:

“Yes, we source primarily from France Côte d’Azur region. All of our hydrolats contain eco-cert ingredients. If we cannot use sustainable wild harvested we will use organic, we work with some co-ops in the U.K. and India also. Everything comes with testing results. Hope this helps. All of our products are 100% botanical.”

Bleu Body Wax:

Performance: I’ve never tried a body wax before, and it’s really quite a treat. It’s solid in consistency (it’s winter where I live), and it melts on contact. You only need a teeny, tiny bit; I made the mistake of slathering on too much and feeling greasy. Given that it’s oil-based, this stuff does take a few minutes to sink into your skin — but I don’t mind!  I’ve used it on both dry and damp skin, and I think it works more effectively on damp skin.

Scent Profile: I recognize that the scent of this products comes from the Tiaré flower and blue tansy, but the fragrance reminds me of the coral jasmine that blossomed nightly in my grandmother’s backyard in Mumbai. The scent is elegantly intoxicating. Admittedly, this might sound insane, but it mirrors the color of the product. It smells…blue. Just wonderful!

Ingredients: * cocos nucifera (coconut oil),+gardenia tahitensis (tiare flower),*tanacetum annuum (blue tansy),*achillea millefolium (blue yarrow),*orbignya oleifera (babassu seed oil) *adansonia digitata (baobab seed oil),+sclerocarya birrea (marula oil), vitamin E oil mixed tocopherols

NON-GMO certified, Vegan, *denotes organic + sustainably wild harvested

Sans Age Serum:

Khus Khus Serum Drop

Performance: Coming off of a recent allergic reaction on my face, I can safely say this product has helped exponentially with inflammation. It’s a light oil — as opposed to a thicker, viscous oil like castor oil — that absorbs quickly. I’m so thankful there isn’t coconut oil in this serum, as my acne prone skin doesn’t respond well to coconut oil on the face. I’m using this morning and night.

Scent Profile: Earthy and herbal; it’s very therapeutic. I imagine that’s influenced by the incorporation of blue tansy and helichrysum. At the risk of sounding trite, I feel like blue tansy and helichrysum are having a “moment” in green beauty. After I gently pat the product onto my face, I like to cup my hands in front of my nose and breathe in the aroma.

Ingredients: *helichrysum italicum (helichrysum), *tanacetum annuum (blue tansy), *chamomilla matricaria (german chamomile), *rosa canina (rosehip Co2),*hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn Co2), +sclerocarya birrea (marula oil),*adansonia digitata (baobab seed oil),*argania spinosa(argan oil), vitamin E oil mixed tocopherols

NON-GMO certified, Vegan, *denotes organic + sustainably wild harvested

I don’t say this often, but these beauties may be my favorite of 2017. These products are gentle, clean, and effective — no face demons or weird reactions here! I’m very curious to try out the other products in their line. The value of this Beauty Heroes box is $116.00, for the price of $39.00! That’s pretty fantastic if you ask me.
