Gram Flour, Turmeric, and Milk Mask

Growing up in an Indian household provided a treasure trove of natural beauty and skincare solutions. Not to mention delicious food, beautiful saris, yoga, and Ayurveda (a system of holistic medicine)…but that’s a story for another day…

Now that we’ve all been captivated by Aishwarya Rai, let’s get back to business. Growing up, my mother always highlighted the importance of self-care – inside and out. Every week, she’d take time out of her busy schedule to share the wellness secrets her mother taught her. She’d massage my hair and scalp with sesame oil and make a soothing facial mask for me to wear. This simple, effective facial mask, comprised of besan flour, turmeric, and milk, works so well that I swear by it to this day!

Turmeric has a myriad benefits; derived from the root of the Curcuma long plant, this anti-inflammatory superfood reduces facial hair growth, helps to lighten hyperpigmentation, combats wrinkles, and can act as a spot treatment for acne.

Besan, or chickpea, flour is also jam-packed with goodness. It helps brighten and tighten skin and helps to remove facial hair. Both turmeric and besan also act as gentle exfoliants.

And everyone knows the moisturizing benefits of milk on the skin; Cleopatra herself bathed in it. And the best part? These ingredients are all-natural! As always, I’d recommend spot testing the mask just to be on the safe side.

facial mask
2 tsp gram (chickpea) flour
1/2 tsp turmeric
3 tsp milk

Mix the ingredients to form a paste and spread over face and neck. Leave on for 20-30 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Give yourself a kiss in the mirror!😘

Disclaimer: Yes, turmeric does stain, so you may need to wash your face a few times. You may also want to use a towel that you don’t mind washing…or use a bright yellow towel…your choice!
