Review: Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

I know what you’re thinking — natural deodorant? Will that stuff actually work? Are there any palatable scents available? My journey to find a natural deodorant started several years ago, because I wanted to be more cognizant of the ingredients I put on and in my body. I tried Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant when it was only offered in a jar, and at the time, I just couldn’t get on board with the fingers in goo —> slather goo on pits with fingers —> washing fingers of goo workflow. What can I say? I’m a stick/roll-on deodorant kind of gal.

When I saw that Schmidt’s offered their deodorant in a stick, I had to purchase it. Schmidt’s is free of aluminum, phthalates, parabens and gluten. It’s certified vegan and cruelty-free. There are lots of scent options and sizes, too! Could a gal ask for anything else?

Scent: Lovely! As you can imagine — like roses and vanilla. The rose scent isn’t cloying at all; I think the vanilla adds a nice balance. I think it’s a delicate, floral, feminine scent.

Application: If you have sensitive pits like I do, make sure to warm up the product on your armpit for a hot second prior to rubbing it in. I made the mistake of trying to rub it on my pits prior to warming it up and got an unexpected exfoliation. Ouch. Once the product warms up, though, it glides on like a dream. I usually swipe two to three times.

  • Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder
  • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil
  • Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter)
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil)
  • Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oi
  • Natural fragrance (essential oils)
  • Tocopherol (vitamin E; sunflower-derived)

Performance: An end of day pit sniff revealed surprising results – I still smelled as pleasant as I did first thing in the morning. This included a full day of work, followed by a workout in the evening. It also didn’t leave any residue on my clothing nor did I experience any weird staining of my pits. Not bad!

Now, as with most natural deodorants, this does not stop you from sweating — which I did throughout the day. It does, however, keep you smelling fresh when the sweat dries. The baking soda in the formulation made my pits a tense sensitive but not a deal breaker. I’ll definitely be buying this again — perhaps I’ll try their sensitive skin line!
